Orange Babies
Targeting 150 HIV+ low-income mothers in Windhoek, this project contributes to the prevention of HIV transmission from mothers to their newborn children (PMTCT) and complements Namibian government PMTCT efforts. The project helps HIV+ mothers buy infant formula for one year and provides counseling and treatment advice to encourage mothers to enter the state program and inform them about the possibilities of treating their own HIV infection. Support groups, run by Lironga Eparu, provide the opportunity to meet with other women and talk about experiences and challenges with trained counsellors. Counsellors and treatment advisors will include people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS, as the program is based on the principle of a meaningful participation of this group of people.
